Hello all, just wanted to hear some of your favorite ways, or best suggestions for opening the closed guard. Let's say they are very strong and just won't uncross no matter how much you try. I have only had this problem once. I was told to stand up to pass his guard, and when I tried it, I was able to eventually pass his guard, but it didn't seem possible without standing. I have often heard that standing in someone's closed guard (gi) is a bad idea because of all the possibilities for sweeps, etc. What do you guys think?

Take care and stay safe!

Hey FullBlast,

Standing up in someone's closed guard is not a problem. Especially if you control one wrist/arm and use your knee's to pinch and control your partners hips. Without his hips and only one hand it's very difficult to get any offense going. I prefer to break someone's guard in a standing posture.

I agree with Tim. If you are trying to break the guard of someone who has a strong guard, and they do not want to open it, it is next to impossible to break it without standing. I can not remember the last time I was forced to open my guard without having my opponent stand, but it has been quite a while.

If you are having a hard time with being attacked when standing, then you should focus on correcting your standing technique instead of se Tim said, use your thighs to control the hips.

I always stand passing. I think the most important thing to do is look up and get your hips forward. I often notice people standing in an upsidedown L position. This makes it easy for the guy on the bottom to get your collar and break you back down.
